FAQ Board Certified-TeleMental Health Provider

Earning the BC-TMH credential tells clients, employers, insurance companies, hospitals, government agencies and others that you have:

  • Received high-quality, state-of-the-art training in the delivery of telemental health services;
  • Passed a comprehensive examination to assess your knowledge of safe and effective practices in providing telemental health services;
  • Committed to pursuing ongoing telemental health continuing education; and,
  • Confirmed your adherence to codes of ethics governing your profession and credentials.

The BC-TMH is a joint effort between the Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE) and the Southside Telehealth Training Academy and Resource Center (STAR). STAR is a joint program administered by the University of Virginia Center for Telehealth and New College Institute.

Currently, the cost of each online training module is $50. Discounts are available for purchases of multiple modules and of the entire series.

Yes, in-person training is available through the Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC. Approved individual training providers determine any fees for in-person training.

Yes. BC-TMH holders pay a $45 maintenance fee each year.

You must submit your application within two years of successfully completing the TMH training exam. Once received, your application will remain active for three years. If you do not earn the credential during that period, you will need to reapply.

The online comprehensive exam is available after the successful completion of all training modules. You can test from anywhere with internet access. The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that will assess your knowledge of the safe and effective delivery of telemental health services. You will have 90 minutes to complete the exam. You must pass this exam in order to apply for the BC-TMH credential.

Yes, you may test a maximum of three times, with a minimum 30-day waiting period between exams. The fee to retest is $50. Information and registration is provided through CCE's learning management system.

The BC-TMH credential focuses on the practical aspects involved in the safe and effective provision of video-based telemental services. It is available to professionals in a variety of behavioral and mental health care spaces.

CCE is discontinuing the DCC credential. We have offered all qualified DCCs a special, limited-time opportunity to quickly convert to the BC-TMH. This offer expires on October 1, 2018

Your BC-TMH application remains active for three years from the date we receive it. If you wish to earn the BC-TMH after the expiration date of your application, you will need to reapply.
