Why is Continuing Education (CE) Important?

BCCs are required to obtain 70 continuing education (CE) clock hours every five years. The following requirements apply:

Four clock hours in coaching ethics

66 clock hours in any of the six BCC Competency Areas

10 clock hours, of the required 70 hours, in each optional specialty designation held.

The following activities do not qualify for continuing education:

  • Consulting work;
  • Time spent working under or meeting with a supervisory or mentor coach;
  • Courses in personal self-improvement; and
  • Trade shows

You should be able to answer “yes” to each question below if an activity meets BCC continuing education requirements.

Does the content of the activity fall into one or more of the six BCC competency areas?
  1. Screening and orientation in coaching
  2. Fundamental coaching skills
  3. Assessments in coaching
  4. Coaching approaches for individuals
  5. Coaching approaches for businesses and organizations
  6. Ethical and professional practice in coaching
Is the activity geared toward coaching (e.g., is not counseling- or treatment-based)?
Does the activity enhance my role as a coach?
Am I able to interact with the instructor/facilitator during or after the session? (College, seminar, and self-study programs only)
Will the activity be completed during my current five-year certification period?
Does the instructor/facilitator have formal education, expertise or credentialing in the relevant BCC competency areas?

View a complete list of CE Opportunities. BCCs may participate in CE activities from any qualified provider. Approved CE providers offer activities that have been prereviewed and meet the BCC continuing education requirements.
